Language: The NME contents page has a very different lay out to the Kerrang contents page. NME has gone for a more old fashioned look to it, it also has a newspaper style effect to it. Unlike the front cover of the NME magazine the contents page seems to be more organised and not as crowed, this gives you mixed views as to what genre the magazine is really aiming for.
Unlike the Kerrang magazine a big part of the contents page is not taken up by one main image, this breaks the typical conventions of a magazine contents page. That could be their way of showing the audience that they don't always follow the 'rules'.
This contents page is not from the same issue as the NME front cover so the main feature artist will be different. But it is unclear as to who the main focus of the magazine is because each image shown on the contents are the same size.
The colours that have been used for the contents page are not the same as the colours that were used on the front cover. This stops the the theme of colours and gives different representations therefore adding confusion to the audience. Not only have the colours changed so has the font this ruins the continuity of the magazine and also breaks another convention because there are not consistent fonts and colours used throughout the magazine.
The biggest Image on the contents page is promoting the NME awards this will get the institution more viewers because the audience will see it being promoted in the magazine.
NME have also given the choice of subscribing to the magazine so they will not have to go out and buy it every time there is a new issue.
There are a variety of artists from different genre of music featured on this contents page therefore it is giving a unclear insight to what the set genre of music this magazine includes and what the target audience will be.
They have used pull quotes for each main section of the contents, this gives the audience an insight to what will be talked about in each article. By doing this it is persuading the audience into buying the magazine.
Ideology: Similar to the Kerrang contents page the sub headings to the more important features in the magazine are much larger than the other sub headings. As you can see the important features have their own picture and the page number is very noticeable. Then the rest of the contents is written in the 'plus' section showing they are less important and are more likely not to be read by the targeted audience. Even though the layout of the contents is different to the front cover and it is not as clear what specific genre of music the magazine is aimed as you can still get a good indication that the main genre of music the magazine focuses on is rock possibly with the addition of other genres in a few of it's issues.
Institution: When looking at this contents page if you did not know what the NME contents page looked like then it would be unclear as to what institution produced the magazine. Firstly the title of the magazine is not shown on the page therefore making the audience unclear of the institution and it is yet again breaking another convention of a magazine. Secondly the font and colours used are very different to the colours that are on the front cover of the magazine again giving a different view of the magazine. The option of subscribing to the magazine is the same as the Kerrang magazine this gives the audience an idea that Kerrang and NME from the same institution.
Audience: The layout of this contents page gives the impression that the target audience for this magazine is people from the ages of 16-25 but the use of plain colours make it uncertain as to what genre of music it mainly focuses on, but going by the main artists who are featured in the magazine it most likely focuses on rock or indie rock music. This magazine will also appeal to both male and female.
Representation: The font is quite formal looking so this gives a different view of the magazine and does not really show it off as being a rock magazine. The style of writing was most probably used to help promote the awards because it helps it to look more professional which will make people watch it. By not showing the face of the person on the biggest image it is giving the impression that they are hiding their identity which is leaving the readers in anticipation because they will want to know who the nominees are. This links in with the text 'nominations revealed' making the audience want to carry on reading the magazine. Also by not specifically showing a stereotyped rock artist they magazine is possibly trying to show that anyone can read this magazine, they do not need to fit into a specific category of people.
