Indie/ Rock Style: Men Moodboard Prezi

Coventions Check

Both magazines front covers, contents pages and double page spreads had similarities, Because of the similarities it helped me to point out the typical conventions of a rock/indie rock music magazine. The typical colours they use and the housestyle of the magazines let me understand what will need to be included on my magazine in order for the genre to stand out to the audience. The fonts used is also a convention that determines the genre of the magazine and show the audience clearly what the genre is. The style of the bands or artists is also a convention because they dress in dark coloured clothes and wear leather look or denim jackets to show of their 'Bad boy' style, also the more indie genre artists will wear clothes such as skinny jeans and a T-shrt usually with writing on it, therefore giving us the representation of them as a band or artist.
Usually the housestyle of the magazine will run continuoulsy throughout the magazine, making it a usual convention but the NME magazine did break that convention by not keeping a continuous font and colour scheme throughout the magazine.

LIIAR Analysis, NME: Double Page Spread

Language: Just like the Kerrang double page spread one half of it is taken up by a large image of the band who is being featured in the article. This gives a clear view of what is going to be talked about in the article before they have even started reading it.
The band name 'The Teenagers' has a bold blue colouring surrounding it. This makes their name stand out clearly to the audience and shows its importantance over the other headings. The reason their name has been written so boldly is possbly because they are a new band and so the magazine is trying to promote them as best as they can so their name will stick in the audiences head.
There is a pull quote used in the middle of the coloumns this is to entice the audience into reading the article so they can understand what the quote was about.
The colour blue that has been used on this double page spread links well with the name of the band. The blue is quite a young boyish looking blue and their name is 'The Teenagers' both of these represent young, male artists.
A 'need to know' box has been included on the page which is alo showing the audience they are a new band because they need an introduction so the audience can get an impression of what their music will be like.
The NME website has also been included on this page. This promotes their website and also lets fans get a closer look at the bands or artists they like and gives them another way of interacting with the band, and another way of having access to the magazine giving them to catch up if they miss an issue.

Ideology: The room the main image of the page was taken in is a very stereotypical teenage boys room because of the vairious posters and the messy look. This reflects where they got their name from and their style. The clothes the band memebers are wearing also give us an impression of the type of music they play. They are dressed as a typical indie rock artist. The skinny jeans and the usually vintige looking T-Shirt. This therefore clearly shows the audience what their music is like and give the audience  a chance to judge whether or not they will be interested. A younger band have been used as the double page spread therefore giving us the impression of their target audience and how it is aimed more at teenagers.

Institution: The colours and font have once again changed which is again not giving a set view of the institution. The house style of this double page spread reinforces the indie rock genre of music which lets the audinece know the genre of music the magazine focuses on. Also the band featured on this double page spread will have most likely been the main image of the front cover of this issue therefore showing the audience that the institution in NME.

Audience: The page is showing us that the audience who will read this will most likely be teenagers who enjoy indie rock music The age of the members in the band show that the majority of the audience to read about the band will most likely be females than males.
The double page spread gives the impression that the age  range for this magazine will be teenagers from the ages of 15-25.

Representation: The way the image of the band has been taken for this double page spread is representing the band as quite easy going, laid back people. They are in a normal teenagers bedroom showing that they are just like any other person and it is showing them as down to earth people. The font that has been used is quite young looking. Also the words that have been used are words a teenager would use rather than an adult, for example 'NME loves' teenagers are usually the ones who are known for expressing their love of music in that way, therefore reinforcing the target audience for the magazine.

LIIAR Analysis, Kerrang: Double Page Spread

Language: A double page spread will usually have one half filled with a large picture of the solo artist or band that the article is about.
It is unusual because the artists name has not been stated on the double page spread this could be to suggest that you should already know who they are so they do not need to be introduced.
There has been only one pull quote used in this double page spread, but it is an effective one. The use of this pull quote will make the audience want to carry on reading the article to make sense of the quote and to find out what the new album will be like and how it is going to be different from their other albums.
The colour scheme for this double page spread has changed now. The reason for this is to match the colours that the singer is wearing and to match the album cover that you can see at the bottom of the right page. This makes sure that everything blends well together on the page so nothing will draw the readers eyes away from the main columns of the article.
The double page spread is written in columns making it clear and easier for the audience to read and it also makes it harder to loose track of where you were reading it. The layout of this double page spread and the way the image is set out help us to get an impression of what the band is like and what their style of music is.
The main image is only one person but as you can see the other image presented on the page is a different person in it therefore showing the double page spread is about a band. By only showing him as the main image it is showing us that he will most likely be the lead vocalist. A mid shot has been used to give a sense of his style and also to reinforce the rock artist stereotype. The emotion shown on his face links in with the pull quote to show the audience that he wants to be taken seriously.

Ideology: The reason the band have not been introduced on this page could be to suggest that they have been in the rock industry for a while therefore do not need an introduction because they are already well known. An older artist has been used so the article will reach out to Kerrangs wider audience and so young people and older people will both enjoy reading this article. The style of the two people in the images help us to get an idea of what their music will sound like. Also including a guitar in the smaller image it is clarifying that they are a band. It is also an electric guitar which is usually stereotyped with rock or indie rock music.

Institution: By looking at this double page spread you know that the company who produced the magazine will be one who focuses on rock. The house style of the pages, including the font and colours that have been used all show the typical colours that are included in a rock magazine. This being another convention of a 'typical' rock magazine. The font is also continuing from the from the front cover and the contents page therefore letting the audience know it is probably going to be Kerrang magazine, that's why keeping similarities on each page is a good idea.

Audience: The style of the band that are featured on this page lead us to believe that the main audience for the magazine will be those who enjoy rock music and possibly have a similar style to the band members shown. The use of an older band allow for a wider audience to like the magazine because it will be appealing to an older audience aswell as a younger one. The neutral colours grey and white that have been used show that this magazine is for a male and a female audience.

Representation: The way In which the grey colour has been added onto the white background once again represents a graffiti/spray painted look this then reinforcing the rebellious style of the whole magazine. The seriousness of the band members face in the main image is showing him and other rock artists in general as a stronger person. Also to show their passion for the music because they don't need to pose to attract people to like their music like other genre artists do. The style of his clothes have the rock artist look to them but then again has a difference from other rock artists, this could be a reflection on their music to show the audience that they are different and original.

LIIAR Analysis,NME: Contents Page

Language: The NME contents page has a very different lay out to the Kerrang contents page. NME has gone for a more old fashioned look to it, it also has a newspaper style effect to it. Unlike the front cover of the NME magazine the contents page seems to be more organised and not as crowed, this gives you mixed views as to what genre the magazine is really aiming for.
Unlike the Kerrang magazine a big part of the contents page is not taken up by one main image, this breaks the typical conventions of a magazine contents page. That could be their way of showing the audience that they don't always follow the 'rules'.
This contents page is not from the same issue as the NME front cover so the main feature artist will be different. But it is unclear as to who the main focus of the magazine is because each image shown on the contents are the same size.
The colours that have been used for the contents page are not the same as the colours that were used on the front cover. This stops the the theme of colours and gives different representations therefore adding confusion to the audience. Not only have the colours changed so has the font this ruins the continuity of the magazine and also breaks another convention because there are not consistent fonts and colours used throughout the magazine.
The biggest Image on the contents page is promoting the NME awards this will get the institution more viewers because the audience will see it being promoted in the magazine.
NME have also given the choice of subscribing to the magazine so they will not have to go out and buy it every time there is a new issue.
There are a variety of artists from different genre of music featured on this contents page therefore it is giving a unclear insight to what the set genre of music this magazine includes and what the target audience will be.
They have used pull quotes for each main section of the contents, this gives the audience an insight to what will be talked about in each article. By doing this it is persuading the audience into buying the magazine.

Ideology: Similar to the Kerrang contents page the sub headings to the more important features in the magazine are much larger than the other sub headings. As you can see the important features have their own picture and the page number is very noticeable. Then the rest of the contents is written in the 'plus' section showing they are less important and are more likely not to be read by the targeted audience. Even though the layout of the contents is different to the front cover and it is not as clear what specific genre of music the magazine is aimed as you can still get a good indication that the main genre of music the magazine focuses on is rock possibly with the addition of other genres in a few of it's issues.

Institution: When looking at this contents page if you did not know what the NME contents page looked like then it would be unclear as to what institution produced the magazine. Firstly the title of the magazine is not shown on the page therefore making the audience unclear of the institution and it is yet again breaking another convention of a magazine. Secondly the font and colours used are very different to the colours that are on the front cover of the magazine again giving a different view of the magazine. The option of subscribing to the magazine is the same as the Kerrang magazine this gives the audience an idea that Kerrang and NME from the same institution.

Audience: The layout of this contents page gives the impression that the target audience for this magazine is people from the ages of 16-25 but the use of plain colours make it uncertain as to what genre of music it mainly focuses on, but going by the main artists who are featured in the magazine it most likely focuses on rock or indie rock music. This magazine will also appeal to both male and female.

Representation: The font is quite formal looking so this gives a different view of the magazine and does not really show it off as being a rock magazine. The style of writing was most probably used to help promote the awards because it helps it to look more professional which will make people watch it. By not showing the face of the person on the biggest image it is giving the impression that they are hiding their identity which is leaving the readers in anticipation because they will want to know who the nominees are. This links in with the text 'nominations revealed' making the audience want to carry on reading the magazine. Also by not specifically showing a stereotyped rock artist they magazine is possibly trying to show that anyone can read this magazine, they do not need to fit into a specific category of people.

LIIAR Analysis, Kerrang: Contents Page

Language: Just like the front cover of the Kerrang magazine the contents page is very crowded making it a typical convention of a rock magazine. Half of the contents page is taken up by an image of a band/artist that are being featured in the magazine.
This contents page is not from the same issue as the front cover. So the band 'Bring me the horizon' would've been the main image for the front cover of this issue meaning that the main focus bands or artists are both shown on the front cover and the contents page.
The similar graffiti font headings have been used on the contents page to add a continuous effect throughout the magazine, similar colours from the front cover have been used with the addition of yellow keeping a theme running.
Unlike usual pop magazines the main image on this page is showing the particular artist in more of a natural surrounding like a 'gig', whereas in pop genre magazines the artist will be shown in a photoshoot surrounding and will have there hair and makeup done nicely. By putting the band or artist in a more natural surrounding it is showing the audience that they are more down to earth people and do not want to be put on a pedestal. The colours used on the contents are very simple colours, this allows for photos and other bits of text to stand out on the page.
The magazine has included posters and competitions into their magazine to entice the audience to buy the magazine and to get more involved. They have made it so the audience can get the magazine delievered to their house, this makes it easier for the audience to purchase the magazine and makes the magazine more profit because the audience will be paying each month to recieve the magazine.
The artist who is shown on the image has many tattoos and long dark hair. These all leads to the typical stereotype of a rock artist therefore showing the audience the type of music the magazine focuses on.The name of the magazine is also included on the contents page this is to remind the audience of the magazines institution.

Ideology: The structure of this contents page is reinforcing the indie rock theme making it clear to the audience the genre of music the magazine is aimed at. The sub headings for the more 'important' articles stand out more clearly to the audience because they will be the main features that the targeted audience will want to focus on. An example of this is the 'bring me the horizon' subheading, you can clearly see that the page number is larger than others therefore showing the audience that it is the most important feature in the magazine. Once again the stereotypical rock artist has been used as the main image, but it uses images of different aged artists so it will be appealing to it's wider audience and will not only attract teens.

Institution: The similar fonts and colours that have been used on the contents page and the addition of the magazines name is making it clear that the institution is Kerrang. Including the magazines name on the contents page is making it clear to the audience what magazine they are reading. Showing them that 'Kerrang' are the company who are responsible for producing the magazine and for selling the magazine.

Audience: The target audience for this magazine is people who enjoy rock music, this is shown clearly to the audience because of the type of bands and artists that are featured on the particular contents page. The age range will also be wide and will not just stick to a set group of people explaining why bands and artists of all ages are featured in this magazine.

Representation: The main image on this contents page has a male who is covered in tattoos this is showing the audience that it is ok to be different. The girl stood near him also has bright coloured hair which is also showing that the magazine is for people who stand out from the crowd and are not afraid to express who they are. The way the people are dressed in the images is carrying on the 'rebellious' look and the unique style of the bands or solo artist, this is carrying on from the front cover of the Kerrang magazine.

Target Audience

LIIAR Analysis, NME: Front Cover

Language: The set out of this front cover is very similar to the Kerrang front cover. But this time the main image is a band instead of a single person. But the set out of the image lets you know that the person at the front is most probably going to be the main singer. This front cover uses the same typical conventions of a magazine which is the same as the  kerrang front cover. There is also the use of a pull quote, 'Things are getting massive...we owe it all to our fans.' this is also persuading the targeted auidence to buy the magazine. But this front cover does have some differences to the Kerrang magazine front cover. The main difference is the fact that this magazine front cover is breaking the conventions of a typical rock genre magazine by the colours that it is using. Brighter colours like yellow, blue and bright red have been used on this. This could be to show that  this magazine has more of a pop rock feel to it so it will also entice people who perfer more chart music to buy the magazine. Just like the Kerrang magazine, including a well known band will encourage people to buy the magazine if they like that bands music, whereas if there was an unknown person on the front cover the audience will not be as interested in the magazine and therefore would not sell very well.
The title of the magazine is small and easy to remember it also stands out clearly as it is the biggest bit of font on the page showing the audience that it is the title. It has a clear font so you can see what it says. Unlike the Kerrang front cover title the 'NME' magazine has gone for a more plan font showing the audience that this magazine will include less strong rock music and will include a variety of different genres of music, therefore reaching out to a different target audience.

Ideology: The ideology for this magazine is people who enjoy a variety of music, but mainly rock and indie rock music. Just like the Kerrang front cover it is very crowded and there are not many blank spaces, this shows that it is a convention of a rock magazine to have their front covers crowded to show that this genre of music is messy compared to other genre's of music. This magazine has used a younger band to be their main image this gives us an idea as to what target audience they are reaching out to. The band that has been used as the main image give out a different view of a indie rock artist, they do not have facial hair and they have a more younger look to them, whereas on the Kerrang magazine the artist used for the main image had a more rugged look to him. This is another way we can see the difference in the target audience for both magazines.

Institutions: The first institution for this magazine is the same company who make the Kerrang magazine, that is why they share similarities in the way both magazines are laid out. The other institution for the magazine is the magazine itself which is a typical convention for every magazine. The house style showing the fonts and the colours that run throughout the magazine determines what target audience the magazine is trying to reach out to. The house style is an important aspect in the production of the magazine as it is what sells to the audience and attracts them to buy it. This magazine will be sold in supermarkets like Tesco, Asda etc. Just like the Kerrang magazine. There is a chance that it will also be sold in certain music shops.

Target Audience: The target audience for this magazine will be different than the target audience for the Kerrang magazine. There will not be as big of a target audience for this magazine because of the all around style of the magazine. I would say the age range for this magazine will be the ages 13-25 because the magazing is featuring younger artists and has a younger look to the magazine which would most probably stop an older audience buying the magazine. Also the use of the word 'Fan' on the front cover is quite a young term used which is giving the magazine a slight teen like theme. Older people who enjoy a particular band would probably not call them selves a fan.

Representation: The representation of this magazine is also quite rebelious mainly because of the way the band are stood in the main image. The lead singer is shown with his arms crossed which is giving the impression he is going against the rules, he is also wearing a leather jacket which gives him the 'bad boy' look. His whole style is quite old fashioned which is showing that they dont follow what other people are doing and todays trends, they will do what they want.
This magazine seems to be trying to please the audience of the magazine by mentioning in the pull quote 'we owe it all to our fans' this gives a younger feel to the magazine. Whereas Kerrang magazine had more of a we dont care attitude and even mentioned they are not trying to 'please' people, showing the difference in the targeted age range.

LIIAR Analysis, Kerrang: Front Cover

Language: The main image for this magazine is Biffy Clyro, This suggests that the issue of the magazine will be mainly focusing on that artist. This will attract the audience that are fans of the artist. The use of the Pull quote "We're not doing things to please people" is giving the audience a taste of what will be included in an article further on in the magazine, which will attract them to buy it. By looking at the colours used for this magazine it straight away gives you a sense that is a rock theme magazine because of the use of the colours red, white and Black, these type of colours are usually stereotyped with the rock genre of music. You notice there are other illustrations showing different stories about other bands, there is also a free poster which is a good convention because it will persuade the audience to buy the magazine.
The main image is a medium close up, and he is staring directly at the camera. This is a good way of interacting with the audience and will persuade them to buy the magazine because it will make them feel more involved in it.
The title of the magazine is all in capitals to show the intensity of the music genre. The font also makes it look like it is graffiti showing that the magazine doesn't follow the rules of other magazines and is quite rebellious. The use of capitals and an explanation mark in the title of the magazine give us the impression that you should shout it when you say it making the magazine seem more exciting. It is also showing that the genre of music is louder than the other genres of music like pop and hip hop etc.

Ideology: The ideology for this magazine is people who enjoy rock music and who like to follow the lives of their favourite rock bands or artists. The layout of this front cover is quite full and crowed and is quite messy and complicated, which to some people would be viewed how rock music is sometimes presented. The main image is Biffy Clyro, they have used him because he is recognisable and he will reach out to different age groups. By doing this it is giving the magazine a wider audience. Also he is used because he has the conventional look of a rock artist, his hair and facial hair all help towards the stereotype of rock. Also using him as the main image will persuade the public to buy the magazine if they are a fan of his music.

Institutions: The institutions for this magazine will be the company that makes the magazine, they are also responsible for the 'NME' magazine. The other institution of the magazine is the magazine itself. The house style shows the fonts and colours that run consistently throughout the whole magazine, this meaning that it will reach out to it's targeted audience. The institution that makes Kerrang magazine also have a music channel this helps them to advertise their magazine because if the general public listen to the music channel and like the music played on it if they then see it's magazine in shops they will be more encouraged to buy it.

Target Audience: The target Audience for this magazine will be all ages because rock music does not have a set audience. It will also mainly have an audience who are fans of rock music. The only ages that this music magazine will not reach out to will be the older generation possibly the ages of 60+ and young children. The magazine will mainly be sold in supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda etc. It could also possibly be sold in music shops.

Representation: The representation of this magazine is quite rebelious and seems like it is for people who dont want to follow the current trends. The use of the colours red and black connote danger and and a darker side of music but then the addition of the white shows the audience that they aren't that bad. The colours also show a more mature theme so the older audience will be interested in the magazine, if the colours were bright, young and childish colours older people would be more reluctant to purchase the item. Biffy Clyro who is the main image is shown on the cover not smiling which is giving a serious feel to the magazine, that is why a medium close up has been used so you can see the emotion in his face. His facial expression also links with the pull quote 'We're not doing this to please people' because his face is serious so it is telling the audience that he is there to be taken seriously.

Example Magazine

This is the type of magazine i will want mine to look like. It will show a variety of different artists. I used Q as an example of a good magazine because it has a good layout and heading that stand out to the audience. It also includes a variety of different genres of music which means it reaches out to a bigger target audience. Which is what i want my magazine to include so it doesn't just reach out to an audience who only like on specific genre of music.
The font and colours run throughout the whole magazine. This is showing that the magazine has included typical conventions into it. Also the contents page has a good, simple layout and has used the majority of the space to show an image of a band they will probably be doing a double page spread on in the magazine.
The double page spread stands out because one side is taken up by an image of the artist which will entice the audience to read the article if they like and recognise the artist.

Go Animate: Discussing The Genre
